Advanced Energy United’s resource, "Advanced Energy Creates Opportunities for Michigan: A Policy Roadmap for Michigan’s Next Governor," outlines how Michigan’s next Governor can continue national leadership to expand affordable energy generation and storage, increase the capacity and efficiency of the state’s energy infrastructure through grid resilience technologies, champion the continued growth of the EV industry; and promote customer-facing technologies to make energy more affordable for consumers across the state.
To achieve these goals, Advanced Energy United’s recommendations for Michigan’s next Governor focus on these core tenets:
- Build it: Michigan has already built a strong policy foundation to attract investment in large-scale power generation through its 100% clean energy standard and permitting reforms. The next step is ensuring that these projects get built by maintaining the state’s siting and permitting processes for large-scale wind, solar, and battery energy storage, and actively engaging with the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and PJM, the regional transmission organizations (RTOs) covering Michigan, to minimize the time to get these projects online.
- Make it Flexible: Michigan’s next governor will inherit a power system facing rapid change. As consumers use more electricity and the state attracts new industries like advanced manufacturing and data centers, electricity demand is expected to grow sharply. Meeting that demand affordably will not just require new power generation, but a more flexible, modern grid that makes smarter use of the technologies in homes and businesses. Michigan can reduce strain on the grid and lower costs for consumers by scaling distributed energy resources (DERs) like battery storage, solar, smart thermostats, and EVs technologies, which can respond to grid conditions in real time. With the right policies and programs in place, customers can volunteer their devices to be used for the benefit of the grid.
- Make it Affordable: Reliability and affordability go hand in hand. Michigan families and businesses are paying the price for years of deferred maintenance and reactive grid investments with more frequent and longer outages than the national average. As demand grows, the next governor must ensure that every single dollar spent delivers better reliability, safety, and long-term savings. That means prioritizing least-cost solutions to avoid expensive overbuilding to keep rate impacts low. Smarter planning by utilities—not just spending—will strengthen the state’s grid while lowering rising costs.
