Expanding Transmission Capacity

To meet growing energy needs, the United States must strategically improve and expand its transmission capacity. New lines are needed to connect renewable energy resources to areas of high demand, and distributed energy resources need to be integrated to ensure a more reliable energy grid. Yet, significant obstacles to these goals remain: securing supportive federal and state policies, navigating complex siting and permitting regulations, and modernizing our current infrastructure to meet future energy demands. Advanced Energy United tackles these issues head-on, working at the local, state, and federal levels to educate, engage, and build support for enhanced and expanded transmission capacity.

How We Work

Educate

Provide research and technical expertise on advanced energy technologies and policies, acting as a resource for state decision-makers across the country.

Advocate

Advocate in state legislative bodies and Governor’s Offices for policies that allow advanced energy solutions to compete fairly in the market.

Activate

Engage energy consumers and empower voters to support political leaders who champion advanced energy through our social advocacy arm, Counterspark.
See how United can unlock market opportunities for your business.

How does this work help your business?

  1. RTO engagement creates market opportunities

Our engagement with grid operators, regional transmission organizations (RTOs), and independent system operators (ISOs) across the country is focused on expanding regional and interregional transmission lines, providing greater energy reliability and affordability for energy customers while creating larger markets for advanced energy technologies and opening access to new regions and customers.

  2. Community-supported transmission projects

Advanced Energy United is working at the local, state, and federal levels to build support for the transmission that is responsive to local objectives and existing state policies, recognizing the role of distributed energy resources in achieving full decarbonization and ensuring that needed transmission buildout will be cost-effective and politically sustainable.

  3. Growing market for advanced transmission technologies

Software and hardware upgrades can significantly boost the existing transmission grid so power can move from where it is generated to where it is needed quickly, at higher volumes. Through education and state legislative and regulatory policy, we promote a suite of advanced transmission technologies (ATTs), including grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) and advanced reconductoring. We work closely with utilities to identify ways to reduce transmission inefficiencies that strain the grid while prioritizing affordability, delivering cost savings, and greater reliability for your business.

Project Spotlight

Transmission possible

Our Transmission Possible resource aims to educate, engage, and build support across the United States for enhanced and expanded transmission capacity. The project is focused on creating new, state-specific resources and materials to support efforts to build new transmission lines and improve existing infrastructure.

Gridlock to growth

Gridlock to Growth is a resource created by Advanced Energy United that supports state decision-makers, staff, and advocates who want to understand the complexities of the regional transmission system, identify opportunities for state engagement in regional and federal energy decisions, and champion policies that improve reliability, affordability, and low-cost energy access.
