Enabling VPPs and DER Aggregation

Distributed energy resources (DERs) are enabling a new era of grid flexibility that empowers consumers to save money and electric utilities to leverage aggregated resources to optimize the grid. Advanced Energy United helps create policy changes in states and wholesale markets to ensure distributed resources, including solar and storage, are properly valued and allow for the scaling up of DERs, virtual power plants (VPPs), energy efficiency, and other demand-side solutions via state programs, plans, and rates. We also work to ensure these customer-owned technologies are factored into transmission planning, so their value to owners and grid operators is fully realized.

How We Work

Educate

Provide research and technical expertise on advanced energy technologies and policies, acting as a resource for state decision-makers across the country.

Advocate

Advocate in state legislative bodies and Governor’s Offices for policies that allow advanced energy solutions to compete fairly in the market.

How does this work help your business?

  1. Customers get more value out of distributed resources

We work with legislative and regulatory decision-makers in states to improve the value proposition of DER adoption for customers by properly valuing their contribution to the grid, through rate design and other regulatory policy, making DERs more enticing consumer products with improved returns on investment.

  2. DER aggregators positioned to scale

By sitting down with legislators, governors, utilities, and state regulators, we educate decision-makers on the value DER aggregation can have for consumers and grid operators, and the policy changes needed to unlock that potential. We also engage directly in wholesale market rule development, and with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), to ensure a fair playing field for the sector. Regulation should foster a competitive market for DER aggregators to encourage innovation in both the products and the offerings available to consumers while driving down participation costs.

  3. DERs factored into transmission planning

Integrating DERs into states and utilities grid infrastructure planning can help defer unnecessary spending, and further increase the true value of DERs. Advanced Energy United produces research to demonstrate this opportunity, and advocates for regulators and grid operators to factor these benefits into transmission planning.
