Advanced Energy United’s resource, "Advanced Energy Creates Opportunities for Pennsylvania: A Policy Roadmap for Pennsylvania’s Governor," outlines how Pennsylvania’s Governor can support the expansion of affordable advanced energy generation and storage, increase the capacity and efficiency of the state’s energy infrastructure through grid resilience technologies, integrate long term planning to prevent unnecessary costs; and promote customer-facing technologies to make energy more affordable for consumers across the state.
To achieve these goals, Advanced Energy United’s recommendations for Pennsylvania’s Governor focus on these core tenets:
- Build it: Electricity prices are rising because of a fundamental mismatch of supply and demand, and Pennsylvania can act at the state level to build more energy resources. Price and supply chain dynamics mean that clean energy resources and battery storage are the cheapest and fastest resources available. While there are also federal and PJM market barriers, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania can do a lot to lead on building advanced energy to meet load growth and ensure households and businesses have reliable energy. This includes reforms to planning, siting, permitting, interconnection, and procurement of advanced energy resources.
- Make it Flexible: Pennsylvania can lower costs right now by making it easier to adopt technologies that make energy demand flexible. This means scaling up dispatchable distributed energy resources, energy efficiency programs, virtual power plants, grid optimization solutions at the transmission and distribution level (i.e., advanced transmission technologies and grid-enhancing technologies), and advanced vehicle and building electrification solutions via state programs, new plans, and rates. These innovative technologies make it easier for energy consumers and grid operators to keep costs down in real-time and in the long run. They also prepare the grid for increased electricity demand from data centers, domestic manufacturing, electric vehicles, and heat pumps.
- Make it Affordable: Energy costs will continue to grow at an unsustainable pace if energy investments are made without proper planning and oversight. The Governor of Pennsylvania can take steps to ensure that utilities build the right infrastructure, minimize inefficiencies in the transmission and distribution systems through innovative technologies and smarter planning, provide service at the lowest possible cost, and identify least-cost financing avenues for projects both big and small.
