Reforming Siting, Permitting, & Interconnection

Building large-scale energy and transmission projects require developers to navigate a cumbersome and time-consuming web of siting, permitting, and interconnection processes, which slows project timelines and increases project costs. Advanced Energy United is working to change that, working hands-on with state, regional, and federal leaders to make both immediate and medium-term process reforms to improve efficiency, reduce costs for project developers, states, and utilities, and ultimately improve bottom lines.

How We Work

Educate

Provide research and technical expertise on advanced energy technologies and policies, acting as a resource for state decision-makers across the country.

Advocate

Advocate in state legislative bodies and Governor’s Offices for policies that allow advanced energy solutions to compete fairly in the market.

Activate

How does this work help your business?

  1. Projects built before incentives sunset

With already-proposed or in-development projects rushing to meet compressed federal incentive timelines, we educate policymakers about executive and legislative actions that help companies to speed up the building of large-scale energy generation.

  2. Projects get fair regulatory treatment

Developing and constructing new clean resources is difficult in many states and jurisdictions as some local governments reject proposals, or move to restrict or ban where projects can be built. Advanced Energy United educates lawmakers and regulators about the benefits of consistency in siting and permitting rules in states, and how to write policies that remove harmful barriers for developers, with the goal of creating more streamlined, predictable, and expedited paths for developers to construct more large-scale wind, solar, storage, and other advanced energy projects.

  3. Easier interconnection for energy projects

Expanding transmission buildout by encouraging proactive and long-term planning, including state and regional coordination, while also making more efficient use of existing transmission infrastructure by supporting legislation and regulation that enables use of surplus interconnection. We also advocate for process reforms to how grid operators manage and study generator interconnection requests so projects can get built more quickly.

Project Spotlight

Gridlock to growth

Gridlock to Growth is a resource we launched to support state decision-makers, staff, and advocates who want to understand the complexities of the regional transmission system, identify opportunities for state engagement in regional and federal energy decisions, and champion policies that improve reliability, affordability, and low-cost energy access.

Pjm

To help state leaders, regulators, and policymakers navigate these developments, we developed PJM Insights for State Leaders—a trusted, nonpartisan bulletin providing concise monthly updates on critical PJM market issues.
