Is This a New Era for DERs in California?

For years, despite their popularity and market share, distributed energy resources (DERs) were being undervalued in California. However, change is on the horizon. California’s 2025-26 legislative session ended with several policy wins for the advanced energy industry, including Senate Bill 913, which marks a major step toward unlocking the full potential of DERs and allowing them to play a bigger role in meeting California’s growing energy needs.

After a multi-year effort of hard work, persistence, and advocacy across the state, Advanced Energy United and its allies were successful in getting the state to acknowledge the value of DERs and providing more opportunities for our industry. But the work doesn’t end with Governor Newsom’s signature. Turning those opportunities into market success will require clear rules, a thoughtful regulatory process, modern grid solutions, and coordinated engagement by the industry to make sure the law works as intended.

In this webinar, panelists discussed the details of the bill, what comes next in the process, and how the state can continue to remove barriers to market-based participation so these resources can help bolster the grid long-term.
