Nevada Regulators Approve NV Energy’s Entry into the Extended Day-Ahead Market

The decision comes at a pivotal time as the West weighs competing market pathways

CARSON CITY, NV—Today, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) approved NV Energy’s proposal to join the Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM), marking a milestone moment for the future of Western energy markets. EDAM is scheduled to go live on May 1 and will soon be overseen by the Regional Organization for Western Energy, a uniquely Western organization that will provide transparent, independent governance for real-time and day-ahead market services.

The decision comes at a critical inflection point as the West grapples with two competing market frameworks. NV Energy’s move adds to EDAM’s position as the West’s most expansive day-ahead market and helps move the whole region towards a more reliable and affordable grid.  NV Energy’s decision to join EDAM was driven by many factors, including EDAM’s market design, its expanding regional footprint, and the clear reliability and economic benefits it offers to participants and consumers.

Advanced Energy United’s Senior Director Brian Turner issued the following statement:

“Today’s approval by the PUCN is a major win for Nevada. By joining EDAM, NV Energy will gain access to a larger, more diverse pool of energy resources, delivering more reliable power to Nevadans.

We are particularly pleased to see the PUCN recognize EDAM’s benefits for integrating Virtual Power Plants – coordinated electric devices like smart thermostats, solar-plus-storage, and electric vehicles already in thousands of Nevada homes and businesses – into significant grid resources that put money back in consumers’ pockets.

At the same time, Nevada’s central location strengthens the Western region as a whole. As a critical hub connecting the Northwest, Southwest, and Interior West, the state’s participation in EDAM will allow power to be seamlessly shared across these regions, again boosting reliability, lowering costs, and making the most out of the West’s naturally abundant resources.”
